Reclassification Process Overview

If a confined space normally requires a permit for entry you can temporarily reclassify the space so that a permit is not needed. To do so requires validating that all hazards have been eliminated.

To reclassify a confined space:

  1. Add a reclassification form for the confined space if one does not already exist. See Confined Space - Add a Reclassification.
  2. Reclassify the confined space. See Reclassify a Confined Space.
  3. Click Print Reclassification Procedure on the Open Confined Space Requests (Permits) page that is displayed when you reclassify the space. Print the reclassification procedure and the lockout procedure if one is associated with the reclassification. Both are available for printing here.
  4. Follow the procedure on the reclassification document to secure the confined space for entry.
  5. Perform the work in the space.
  6. Close the reclassification. See Close Reclassification.
  7. Scan and upload the reclassification document if not done in the previous step. Go to Confined Space > Open CS Requests, find the reclassification in the list, and click Upload Document.
