Lockout/Tagout - Edit Text Defaults
Note: Brady default items (denoted by a locked padlock icon) cannot be deleted or edited, however, you can add new items and edit those details. Energy Source types that display a Brady logo next to them indicate that a label using the same graphic can be purchased from www.bradyid.com.
To access text defaults for Lockout/Tagout, point to the Lockout/Tagout tab, then point to Lockout/Tagout Admin, and then click Edit Text Defaults.
- Select a category from the Manage drop-down list. The list on the left shows defaults for the selected category. The list displays the text values assigned to the default language (the language in which the website is running). Values for other languages are not visible in the list.
- Choose an item from the list. The details display to the right of the list.
-
Click in the Text in field and select a language. Initially, the value for all languages is the value entered for the default language. Change the values for all other languages accordingly.
In the following example, the website is running in English. The term in English is Padlock. The right pane shows a translation added for Spanish.
-
Type a Name in the selected language and fill in all other fields. The information required depends on the category of text default chosen in the Manage list. You cannot change the values for Brady defaults.
- Select or clear the Include in procedure templates check box to include or exclude the selected item from procedure templates.
- Click Save.
- Select a category from the Manage list. The list on the left shows defaults for the selected category.
-
Click Add, then enter the details in the panel on the right. The information requested varies depending on the item you are adding. (You can also click Copy to copy an existing energy source, then enter or change the details as needed.)
- If adding new Energy Source Types, more fields are required than for other text default categories.
- Type a Name and an Abbreviation.
- Click Select to import a graphic to use as the icon.
- Click on the square showing the Cell background to select a different background color. A preview below shows how the energy source type will appear in a procedure.
- Select either black or white for the Cell Text color. Choose white with a dark background, or black with a light background.
- Select the Include when counting and printing lockout points check box to:
- Count steps using this energy source type in the total number of lockout points.
- Include this energy source type when printing lockout tags.
Generally each step in a lockout procedure is counted in the total number of lockout points and printed with lockout tags. The Note energy source type is a good example of an energy source type that would not be counted or printed.
- (Optional): Click the box to reverse the color on the energy source ID.
- Select the Include in procedure templates check box to include the new item in procedure templates.
- Click Save.
Translation note: If you have templates for multiple languages, the new term is created for each language, but the value is initially the value you just entered in the default language. Only the default language is visible in the list on the left. Be sure to add a translation for each language. For more information, expand the To edit existing text defaults ... section. If translations are not added, the term in the default language will be used in documents based on other languages.
Note that user-entered defaults are not included when using the translate feature on a document; translations must be supplied here.
- Click to expand the Manage list, and select Energy Source Descriptions.
- Click Add Multiple below the list of energy source descriptions. The Add Energy Source Description window opens.
- For each new energy source description, type the name and press Enter.
- Be sure the Include in templates box is selected if you want users to be able to select these energy source descriptions when editing procedures.
-
Click Create.
The descriptions are added to the list and assigned to the same language as the website. For help adding translations, expand the To edit existing text defaults ... section.
Note: You cannot delete any standard Brady text defaults. A locked padlock icon displays next to Brady defaults that cannot be deleted. You can disable the Brady defaults for authors by clearing the Include in procedure templates check box.
- Select a category from the Manage drop-down list. The list on the left shows defaults for the selected category.
- Click the item you want to remove, then click Delete.
- Click Delete to confirm the deletion. The item is removed from the list.
This icon in the list of energy source types indicates a nonspecific lockout point. Lockout points with this symbol are for use with pre-printed energy source labels that simply say LOCK-OUT POINT. These labels do not indicate the type of energy source or a number to match to the energy sources in a lockout procedure.
Caution: Using nonspecific lockout points can lead to errors when performing a lockout procedure due to the lack of color coding and lack of specific energy source identification that clearly corresponds to the lockout procedure.
Best practices:
-
Because nonspecific lockout points don't contain an indication of the energy source type, create a specific description including both the energy type and the magnitude. For example,
Electrical 220 volts
. Choose Energy Source Descriptions in the Manage list. The description is the only differentiating factor between nonspecific energy sources when labeling images (see Label Images).
- Assign a background color to nonspecific energy source types as a visual indication of the type. For example, add a red background for electrical.
- Example: Note that the two nonspecific points are called just LOCK-OUT POINT in the procedure. This matches the label applied to the equipment. One nonspecific point in the example uses a standard description, the other uses a background color and a description created specifically for this energy source. A standard energy source is included for comparison.
